Many of us can recall being profoundly impacted by God’s word preached. The potency of God’s word proclaimed derives in part from Scripture’s own self-authenticating power that pierces into the deepest recesses of the human heart (Heb 4:12). It also derives from the influence of the Holy Spirit empowering the preacher who expounds and applies the Scripture to the hearer (Rom 10:14-17; 1 Cor 1:18-31; 1 Thess 1:4-5).
