Jan. 18, 2017 “Can Christians Lose Their Salvation” James White vs Trent Horn Debate in Atlanta, GA

Alpha & Omega Ministries:

The material principle of the Reformation was sola fide, justification by faith alone in Christ alone to the glory of God alone. But the Reformed tradition likewise affirmed that since salvation was an act of God focused upon the elect, performed by the Son in obedience to the Father, as a divine act it cannot be reversed. That is, salvation cannot be lost, for to say otherwise is to say Christ can fail to do the will of the Father.

The Roman Catholic Church has historically affirmed the ability of the justified to lose the grace of justification through the commission of mortal sins. Few topics focus the attention more upon the grounds of salvation than the question, can it be lost in those who once are truly saved? This will be the focus of our debate.

Join us for a thorough debate with Dr. James White and Trent Horn as we openly discuss the issues surrounding this highly debated issue.

Rich Pierce @ Alpha & Omega Ministries:

flowers debateWhile this is definitely an interesting exchange, it is not a very good debate. The topic was supposed to involve both sides presenting a positive exegesis of Romans 9 so that the audience could compare and decide for themselves. Professor Flowers chose to make a presentation on Total Depravity (which was the topic he had originally suggested), and then make some surface-level comments about how his position would be relevant to particular sections of Romans 9. Hence, the formal debate was basically uncontested, but the secondary debate (total depravity) was only partially contested, as James did not get to make a positive presentation on the topic. Despite this (all too common) problem, the discussion is very useful in comparing Reformed theology and exegesis with what calls itself “traditionalist” Southern Baptist views.

The audio can be purchased for $7.50/$9.00 here.

Update May 12, 2015: James White gave his report on the debate in a portion on today’s Dividing Line [video | mp3]

He also posted his Final Observations on the Leighton Flowers Discussion (With Addendum).

A Calvinist responds to an Arminian responding to a Calvinist critiquing an Arminian’s book on Prevenient Grace [Tom Nettles]

From Books at a Glance:

prevenient graceIn case you’re new with us, let me bring you up to date regarding this discussion. Dr. Tom Nettles of our Board of Reference here at Books At a Glance recently posted a review of Dr. Brian Shelton’s Prevenient Grace: God’s Provision for Fallen Humanity. In this book Dr. Shelton defends an Arminian perspective on the subject, and in the review Dr. Nettles offered a respectful critique from a Calvinist perspective. Dr. Nettles and I agreed that it would be good to allow Dr. Shelton – also a friend of Books At a Glance – an opportunity to respond.

The exchange has been respectful and illuminating, and I appreciate the graciousness displayed by both of these men – we now can say that at least once in our lifetime we have seen a Calvinist-Arminian debate that didn’t embarrass either side! Many thanks to them both.

Now today, Dr. Nettles finishes up the conversation with some final reflections. [Read]

Dr. James White

On yesterday’s Dividing Line, James White made an important announcement and request:

“Two of the most useful Islamic debates that we’ve done [are now online]… whatever means you have, get [them] out there.”

Hear him for yourself at the 7 minute 41 second mark:

Here are the debates he was referring to:

James White vs. Manuel Colwell ‘Oneness Mini Debate’ [AUDIO|VIDEO]

Yesterday’s [Nov. 24, 2014] Dividing Line featured a 45 minute “mini” debate between James White vs. Manuel Colwell on Oneness Theology. Each person picked two text to deal with, the text were Mark 13:32, 2 Cor. 5:19, John 17:5, and Phil. 2:6-8.

James White:

For years Manuel Culwell has called the Dividing Line. Most of the time, in the past, when we have tried to dialogue, things went south…quickly. Then, a few months ago, we had a fairly controlled discussion, so I suggested then that at some point we choose some texts and discuss them. Well, it took a while, but today Manuel called in and we had our discussion. It takes up the first 45 minutes of the program. Then I replied to Derek Frank’s second post on FaceBook in “response” to me, pointing out that, well, he seems to think that assertion, and argument, are equivalent things (they are not).
